The primary mission of the Intelligent Vehicles Institute (IVI) is collegiate education and original
equipment manufacturer (OEM) training. Included are all intelligent vehicles whether flying,
floating, swimming, or rolling as well as manned and unmanned. The income they earn as
interns allows them to be immersed in their learning full time. It allows them to receive more
hands-on time than possible during limited classroom hours. One year fellowships create full-
time jobs for graduates of their respective college programs. The fellows will teach and
supervise the activities of the interns. The fellows move on to careers with IVI, IVI’s clients, and
other employers. Interns graduate to fellowships, and the cycle repeats creating a self-
sustaining mechanism that benefits students, manufacturers, colleges, and the local community.
The interns and fellows not only accumulate valuable skills and experience but also earn credit
via a cooperative agreement with their college.
Intelligent Vehicles Training and Resource Center
Strategically located on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, the Intelligent Vehicles Training and
Resource Center is a fully staffed and equipped facility. Autonomous and remotely operated
vehicles curriculum is taught in a classroom setting as well as in the water and in the air.
Mission control suites, that include line of sight and over the horizon telemetry, allow students
to perform live hands-on operations near the shore, at sea, and within an active commercial
port. The center is surrounded by rivers, protected bays, harbors, beaches, shallow marshes,
and deep seas. This unique low traffic volume maritime and aviation environment is ideal for
training, proving grounds testing, and sales demonstrations. The maintenance depot can repair
components, modules, and entire vessels to include composite materials, electronics, electrical,
motors, drives, hydraulics, pneumatics, propellers, and thrusters.
